Friends of Lansdowne Challenge City on Lack of Disclosure
Lawyer Steven Shrybman has filed a new motion with the Ontario Superior Court on behalf of his clients, Friends of Lansdowne Inc., Gary Sealey and Doug Ward, to compel the City of Ottawa to release financial details of the Lansdowne Partnership Plan.
The challenge comes after both the City and the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) refused to provide key documents detailing the financial deal concerning the Lansdowne Partnership Plan, including the master Project Agreement which the City has promised to make public.
"It's stone-walling, plain and simple," stated a frustrated Doug Ward, one of the applicants. "Getting access to financial documents is critical to our case. The City is withholding basic information for a project involving prime public land and millions of taxpayers' dollars. What is the City trying to hide?"
Steven Shrybman is surprised the City has not been more forthcoming. "This is a case where we are challenging the city for lack of transparency. We had presumed there would finally be full disclosure by the City, and we retained experts to review the whole deal. How can the experts or a judge (or the public) understand this deal if they refuse to disclose it? "
Friends of Lansdowne Inc. has secured the intervention of leading investigative accounting firm, Rosen and Associates, and municipal tax expert, Harry Kitchen to review the Lansdowne deal. The firm has indicated that the documents in question are necessary for its review of the Lansdowne Plan.
The motion also seeks an order prohibiting the city from seeking costs against the applicants.
