Hello Friends,
I am raising funds to get the City's Lansdowne plans set aside by the courts, and I need your help. We are raising $100,000 for the litigation and already have more than $25,000.
There are two things you can do right away:
- make a donation, and
- send this message to your friends and family asking for their support too. (Please see below for ways to donate.)
Lansdowne Park is an important piece of public land in the centre of Ottawa that could be redeveloped in an exciting way, but the City's arrangement with the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) plans fall far short of that and is a bad deal for taxpayers. The City will spend between $129 and $200 Million of your money on this scheme. Your taxes will go up, while developers profit from a public resource.
Consider:
- There was no competitive process to determine fair value or seek alternative ideas.
- Taxpayers are paying 100% of the stadium renovation costs.
- The City is giving developers a 30 year lease for $1.00 per year for the 10 acres of valuable public land to be developed commercially.
- The City plans to transfer Lansdowne Park to a new corporation that will in turn enter into other leases and arrangements with OSEG for some or all of the rest of the park.
- Over 90 events a year will cause traffic gridlock since there is no rapid transit and insufficient parking.
- A historic public place beside a UNESCO world heritage site will be virtually privatized when it is converted to retail, offices and housing.
We think the City can do something better at Lansdowne Park. We have engaged a first-rate lawyer, Steven Shrybman, who successfully fought the privatization of Hydro One. We have a compelling legal case that you can read about on our website. Our full application and affadavits are there for all to see.
